New Affordable Housing Complex Officially Opens
EDMONTON, Saskatchewan, August 30, 2007 — Pino Brothers Affordable Housing officially opened Italian Village, their new 78-unit, affordable housing rental project, at 95th Street and 107 A Avenue in Edmonton. This project will provide housing at below-market rental rates for low-to moderate-income families, individuals and persons with disabilities.
Peter Goldring, Member of Parliament for Edmonton-East, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, Thomas Lukaszuk, MLA for Edmonton – Castle Downs, Councillor Michael Phair, from the City of Edmonton and Tony and Peter Pino attended a ribbon cutting ceremony today, which symbolically opened the door to the new affordable housing complex.
“Canada’s New Government is committed to making affordable housing available in Alberta and across Canada for those who need it most,” said MP Goldring. “The creation of these new units will allow low-income families and individuals in Edmonton to live in safe, quality housing at an affordable cost and start a new page in their lives.”
The project was built, and will be operated by Pino Brothers Affordable Housing. Funding for the project’s construction included $3.9 million from the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta, through the Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program.
“This project is an excellent example of what can be achieved when we work together to address the housing needs in the community,” said the Honourable Ray Danyluk, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “The Government of Alberta will continue to work with our partners to provide affordable housing in Edmonton and throughout the province.”
“We are proud of this project and the positive impact that it is having on our residents, neighbours and the community,” said Tony Pino, co-owner of Pino Brothers Affordable Housing. “We commend all orders of government and the community for their assistance and support of this project. We are proud to play a part in addressing the affordable housing needs in Edmonton.”
The Italian Village project consists of 45 bachelor and barrier free units, 27-one bedroom units and 6- two bedroom units. All the units are self-contained and will provide rental rates below current market costs in the Edmonton area.
The Canada – Alberta Affordable Housing Program assisted in the creation of sustainable rental housing for low- to moderate-income Albertans, through the construction of new or renovated affordable housing units. Under the program close to $200 million was committed to affordable housing projects throughout the province that will lead to the development of close to 3,700 units.
Pino Brothers have been closely associated to the “Little Italy” area of Edmonton for more than 40 years. They built the Italian Village affordable housing project on the same spot that their parents opened an Italian grocery store in the 1960s. As landlords, with more than 40 years of experience, the Pino Brothers philosophy to treat tenants like their extended family has been very successful in running a successful business and attracting and keeping long-term tenants.
