Hanley Seniors to Benefit From New Housing Project

HANLEY, Saskatchewan, July 11, 2007 — Construction of a seniors housing project featuring 12 affordable rental units officially began today with a sod turning ceremony in the Town of Hanley.

“Canada’s New Government is committed to supporting affordable housing solutions for seniors,” said Lynne Yelich, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and Member of Parliament for Blackstrap, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development. “This project means seniors in Hanley will be able to continue to live in the community, stay close to their family and friends, and enjoy a better quality of life.”

“This project is made possible thanks to the province’s HomeFirst affordable housing strategy,” Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Kevin Yates said. “Our government is committed to making life better for Saskatchewan seniors by ensuring that they have access to adequate, suitable and affordable housing. I am pleased that this project is just one of many housing initiatives tailored to address the unique needs of individual Saskatchewan communities.”

“This is a big day for Hanley,” Town of Hanley Mayor Don Lynn said. “The town council, housing committee and citizens of Hanley have been working closely with the Centenary Affordable Housing Program to initiate the development of the Hanley seniors’ housing complex. After two and a half years of negotiations, surveys and planning, it is finally happening. Congratulations to all those who have worked so hard to get us here.”

The initiative will consist of two buildings which will be renovated into 12 two-bedroom affordable rental units for low and moderate-income seniors, both singles and couples. Features will include a common dining room and kitchen area. Each unit will have approximately 550 square feet of living area consisting of a kitchenette, living/dining room, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The design is suitable for independent living.

The total estimated cost, including land, is $833,050. The Town of Hanley was approved for $648,000 under the Centenary Affordable Housing Program (CAHP). The CAHP breakdown is as follows: $324,000 from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); $259,200 from Saskatchewan Housing Corporation; and $64,800 from the Town of Hanley. The funding balance will be provided in the form of mortgage financing $161,050 and land contribution $24,000 (Town of Hanley).

CAHP is funded under the Canada – Saskatchewan Affordable Housing Agreement. It provides approximately $33 million in federal funding for affordable housing, which is matched by Saskatchewan, municipalities and other partners. With these matching contributions, a total of over $66 million will be committed by 2007 – 2008 for affordable housing.
